1 General:
Historical background, composition of concrete, general note on strength
mechanism, current practice and future trends.

2 Ingredients of Concrete

a. Cement- Chemical composition, hydration, heat of hydration,
hydrated structure, various types of cement, testing of cement as per
Indian standard.
b. Aggregates-Function in concrete, classification, effect of geometry &
texture, strength, mechanical properties, moisture content, water
absorption, bulking of sand, deleterious substances, sieve analysis,
various grading and grading requirements, sampling & testing as per
Indian Standards.
c. Water- General Requirements & limiting values of impurities.
d. Admixtures- Additives and admixtures, types, need and benefits
Mineral admixture - Fly ash, silica fume, blast furnace slag, and other
pozzolanic materials.
Chemical admixtures - Accelerator, retarder, water reducing
elements, plasticizer and super-plasticizer, their functions and
dosage.

3 Fresh concrete :
Methods of mixing, transporting and placing of concrete. Workability –
Definition and need, factors affecting workability, various tests as per IS ad
ASTM. Segregation and bleeding, stiffening, re-tempering. Curing:
necessity and various methods, microcracking.

4 Hardened concrete:

Compressive and tensile strength and their relationship, various tests as
per IS and ASTM. Factors affecting strength – water cement ratio, gel
space ratio, aggregate cement ratio, properties of ingredients, effect of age,
maturity, aggregate cement-paste interface, various finishes of concrete.
Introduction to aspects of elasticity, shrinkage and creep. Tests for strength
of concrete: Destructive, semi destructive and non- destructive tests with
their limitations, test methods as per IS and ASTM.

5 Durability and permeability of concrete:

Definitions, causes, carbonation, cracking

6 Concrete in aggressive environment:

Alkali – aggregate reaction, sulphate attack, chloride attack, acid attack,
effect of sea water, special coating for water proofing, sulphate chloride and
acid attack, concrete for hot liquids.

7 Special Concrete:

Review of behavior and characteristics of high strength concrete, high
performance concrete, fiber reinforced concrete, mass concrete, light
weight and heavy weight concrete, Precast concrete.

8 Special concreting techniques:

Pumped concrete, shotcrete, underwater concrete, pre-placed concrete,
vacuum dewatered concrete, hot and cold weather concreting, Ready
mixed concrete.

9 Concrete mix design:

Principles of mix proportioning, probabilistic parameters, factors governing
selection of mix. Road note - 4, DOE, ACI and IS method of concrete mix
design, Variability of test results, acceptance criteria, various IS code
provisions.

10 Repair and rehabilitation:

Distress in structure – causes and precautions, damage assessment of
structural elements, repairing techniques and repairing materials.

Term Work:

(A) Term work shall consist of tests on cement and aggregate, fresh concrete and
hardened concrete. It includes destructive, partial destructive and non- destructive
tests.
(B) Term work shall include report on topic assigned by respective lab in-charge.
© Term work shall include field visit and students will have to submit a report on it.
(D) Oral/Practical marks include viva-voce on practical performed and submitted
reports.

Sr.No Course contents

1 Torsion:

Torsion of soild and hollow circular shaft, shear stress and strain due to torsion, angle of twist, torsional moment of resistance, power transmitted by shaft, keys and coupling, combined bending and torsion, closed coiled helical sprigs.

2 Thin cylinder:

Analysis of thin cylinder and spherical vessels under pressure

3 Fundamentals:

Types of statically determinate & indeterminate structures, static and kinematic indeterminacy, stability of structures, principle of superposition, Maxwell’s reciprocal theorems. Computation of internal forces in statically determinate structures such as compound truss, portals, gables, grids, beams curved in plan.

4 Displacement of determinate beams and plane truss:

Differential equation of elastic curve, relation between moment, slope and deflection, Macauli’s method, moment area method, conjugate beam method applied to beams including varying moment of inertia, Joint displacement of determinate plane truss using unit load method.

5 Arches, cables and suspension bridges:

Three hinge arch - segmental and parabolic shapes. Forces and end actions in cables, unstiffened three hinged parabolic and cantenory type suspension bridge.

6 Strain energy:

Resilience, strain energy in tension, compression, shear, bending, torsion, proof resilience, modulus of resilience, impact loads, and sudden loads.

7 Influence lines:

For statically determinate beams, I.L.D for support reaction, shear and moment for u.d.l, several point loads, criteria for maximum effects, influence lines for statically determinate trusses, forces in members for u.d.l and point loads, criteria for maximum effect.

8 Direct and bending stresses:

Members subjected to eccentric loads, middle third rule, kernel of section, chimney subjected to wind pressure, retaining walls, dams subjected to hydraulic pressure.

9 Columns and struts:

Buckling of columns, different end conditions, effective length, least radius of gyration, product of inertia, principal axes and Mohr's circle of inertia, Euler's and Rankine's formulae, columns with initial curvature, eccentrically loaded columns, columns with lateral loading.

Term Work:

This will consist of graphical and/or analytical solutions of at least 30 problems
based on the above course. Practical examinations shall consists of oral based on
term work and above course.

5 Preparing Working Drawings of Residential Buildings. Various types, Scale selection, Material description.
6 Elements of Perspective Drawing-basic terms, One point and Two point Perspective.

(B) TOWN PLANNING

1 History, Ancient Planning in India, Origin and Growth of towns, Satellite Town, Ribbon development
2 Civic surveys: Purpose, Types, Data required, Presentation.
3 Elements of City Planning, Circulation, Zoning and land use, Housing, Landscape pattern, Master plan, Town Center, Civic centers, Shopping Center, Town Planning Schemes, CBD.
4 Elements of Neighborhood.
5 Slum: definition, Slum improvements.

Term Work:

(A) Four A

Size Drawing sheet:
(1) Residential Planning: Two storied Building: Plans, elevation, section, 1 lay-out plan, key plan, site plan, area table, schedule of opening.Scale1:100.
(2) Public Building: Ground Floor plan, typical floor plan, elevation, section, lay-out plan, key plan, site plan, area table, schedule of opening.
(3) Working Drawing: sheet should accommodate min. six types with sectional details. ( Furniture plan, Drainage lay out, Toilet Detail, Wood work detail, Kitchen detail, Electrical plan etc)
(4) Perspective Drawing: Two point perspective of sheet -1 planning.

(B) Assignments:

1 Fluids:

Pressure and its measurement, fluid pressure at a point, Pascal’s law, pressure and its relation with height, atmospheric, absolute, gauge and negative pressure, measurement of pressure through piezo-meter and various types of manometer.
Total pressure, intensity of pressure, centre of pressure. Pressure on horizontal, vertical, inclined and curved surface.
Buoyancy, centre at Buoyancy, Meta centre and Meta centre height.
Condition of equilibrium of floating and submerged body. Experimental and
analytical method to determine Meta-centric height. Pressure in case of accelerated rigid body motion.

3 Fluid Kinematics:

Methods of describing fluid motion,-Types of motion, Inviscid flows, Velocity and acceleration-Continuity equation-Potential flows-Velocity potential and Stream function, Flownet- Circulation and Vorticity- Source, Sink and Doublet

4 Fluid Dynamics:

Types of forces, Forces influencing fluid motion-energy and Head-energy correction factor, Euler and Bernoulli’s equations, Application of Bernoulli’s equation. Flow measurement, Linear momentum equation, momentum correction factor, Application of momentum equation.

5 Flow Through Pipes:

Introduction, Loss of energy in pipe, major and minor losses of energy in pipes, hydraulic gradient, total energy line, pipes in series, pipes in parallel, flow through branched pipes, and hydraulic transmission of power.

6 Measurement of Flow :

(a) Orifice & Mouth piece

Classification, hydraulic coefficients, experimental determination of hydraulic coefficient. Discharge through all types of office & mouthpiece, time of emptying the tank through orifice and mouthpiece.
(b) Notches and Weirs
Classification, discharge through various types of Notches and Weirs. Time of emptying a Reservoir or a Tank with notches & weirs.
