It is a development of Master students from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qmul.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Queen Mary, University of London<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/solar-copter2.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3143\" alt=\"solar-copter2\" src=\"http:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/solar-copter2.jpg\" width=\"818\" height=\"520\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The very first <strong>Solarcopter<\/strong> prototype was designed to fly solely from energy generated from a photovoltaic panel, but with the assistance of a reserve battery that was also charged by the copter\u2019s solar panel. The purpose of this battery was to provide energy when the solar panel was not able to do so.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/copter011.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3144 alignleft\" alt=\"copter011\" src=\"http:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/copter011.jpg\" width=\"818\" height=\"560\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After that, the students improved their prototypes and the following <strong>Solarcopters<\/strong> are able to fly, take off and hover without the need of a reserve battery. \u201cWith the current design it will fly for as long as the <strong>Sun<\/strong> shines in theory and we have tested this experimentally for a substantial amount of time.
